An Academic REP  strives to make the college experience of every single student here better. Academic REPs represent the students in their course within their Faculty. For example, if you were a First Year undergraduate studying music you could become the Academic REP for your year in music within the Faculty of Arts alongside reps for music technology and other music courses.

As an Academic REP you’ll provide the vital link between both the officers of the Union (Leon, Katie, Kim & Paul) and the general student body, whether this is coming into Katie to say that your class feels annoyed about a problem with facilities, or going to a lecturer and giving some constructive feedback about their class.

You’ll also be a member of the staff student liaison committee, run by your department, where you can give a voice to students about academic issues. You also sit on the SU faculty councils run by your faculty convenor and have the option to seek a seat on the Student Academic REP Council and MSU Student Senate, should you wish.

As a representative of your Department, you’ll also be able to organise some fun for them! This is much more fun side of being a REP, organising a night out in the SU or a trip away somewhere, setting up a facebook page for your class, ordering hoodies, the options in this part are only limited by your creativity!

Being an Academic REP also looks great on your CV, at some point in your life you’re almost guaranteed to use some of the skills that you practice as an Academic rep as part of your career. This could be public speaking skills to make a presentation, negotiation skills to make a sale,, event planning, management, the list is endless!

So to sum it up, being an Academic REP offers you the chance to learn new skills, practice old ones, make some new friends, improve the university and have a lot of fun while doing it all! Basically, you get a great reward for your work, so why not run for Academic REP and represent your Department?
